  • Hello from Colorado

Just joined up, trying to read up as much as possible. Bought a 16 in Ryobi scroll saw off of CL for 30 bucks. I've wanted to try this for quite some time so figure for finding one for so cheap I'd try it out.

I'm sure this is a common, easy question but for the patterns, is it as simple as printing it out, securing it to the wood and cutting it out?

    Thanks,
    Dave

Hi, Dave! Welcome to the group. It's almost as simple as that. The most popular way to attach patterns to the wood is to make a copy, put some blue painters tape or clear packing tape on the wood in a single layer that covers the area you are going to cut. Then you spray glue onto the back of the pattern and attach it on top of the tape. There are two reasons for doing this. One is that is makes removing the pattern much easier and the other is that the tape seems to lubricate the blade which helps prevent friction burns on the wood. Other folks put repositionable glue on the back of the pattern and stick it directly on the wood. This glue is available in either spray or glue sticks. Some folks use the page sized label paper with stickum already on the back. They copy the pattern to the label paper and then attach it directly to the wood or over tape. Another method that some use is the Xyron label machine. This machine applies glue to the back of plain paper and turns it into a label. Of course, this is a bit more expensive than the other methods, but is very easy to do. Once the pattern is attached to the wood, take it to the saw and enjoy your day.

        Thanks Jan and wood.

Another probably stupid question. I get the template on and I drill small holes in between the cut outs to where the blade needs to go to cut out a pattern?

I found what I think is a simple plan for a photo frame that I'm going to try.

Thanks for the tip flyfishermen, my wife is a big crafter and has some of that temp spray glue.

Think I'll work on one tonight.
