  • Sculpted box

    Hi

Here is an image of a two drawer box I've recently completed, sculpted from one block of Australian Red Cedar.

Wow Tony--you do great stuff! Looked at your gallery. You are a real artist. I envy you your sense of design and the availability of beautiful wood to carry it out. How thick is this stuff? Looks too thick to cut with a scroll saw. Do you use a bandsaw part of the time? I would like to try my hand at making a box or two. Thanx in advance for the info.

Excellent! Your Australian Cedar is beautiful to say the least.
      And great designs too.

        Sculpted Boxes

        Hi

Thank you for the nice words. With the Diamond Fretsaw I can make boxes of 4 1/2" or 12mm depth, see -

            Tony,
Welcome to the group. It looks like there are a lot of things we will want to ask you, as well as answering any questions you have.
I am truly envious of your capacity with your Excaliber. Possibly you mean 12 cm? My bandsaw will go that thick, but not very well. I imagine all sorts of stuff could just be shrunk for the rest of us.
Anyhow, beautiful box, and terrific choice of wood.

First off how thick is the board you cut?
When I want something to stand out I use backer-boards 1/8 thick to get the depth.
that means you would have to cut the big cutting into pieces to put the spacer behind.
for instance the cloud bottom right which his hand is on I would put maybe...

I am stunned at the fact it wasn't rotted or termite destroyed. That must've been one blessed lady. Thank you for what you all are doing!

Pretty boards. Our Walmart didn't have any when I went. Thank you for sharing though.

Looking at the image, I would sand down the clouds a bit on the left (as you're looking at it)....to make it look like the clouds on the right are the closest to you. Then with the clouds to the left being less pronounced it will make it look more like he is sitting on them. Humorous design choice...

I would have to agree that I've not personally made many designs from the magazine, as I have progressed to making most of my own designs. However, I do enjoy some of the reviews and other articles---as well as checking out techniques of others. I debated as well, but decided to renew. Now I just...
