My name is Gill and I live in England. I've been scrolling on and off for quite a few years now, although not recently due to a lack of workshop. However, I've just had a new one constructed and hope to be scrolling again when it's fitted out.

I use a variable speed Hegner 2 and I'll have a go at making anything! Decent timber and ply is hard to come by in the UK so I work mostly in medium density fibreboard (MDF). Decent blades are also hard to come by, although I've just ordered a selection of FD from Mike so hopefully things should be improving shortly .

You guys in the US really seem to have scrolling sussed! You've got your own magazines, proper clubs and courses, good equipment and material supplies. If it wasn't for the lovely weather over here , I might be tempted to emigrate!

Hi Gill welcome aboard. I to was from England, as for the weather...I like the rain here in British Columbia, I think it must be softer water or something
I hope you are wearing a mask when you cut that MDF!
There is an incredible scrollsaw that comes from England but the website seems to be on and off a little too much to get any good information.
The saw is the JD Woodward Fretsaw. It is a real feat of engineering, which incorporates some unique blade clamps, a deep throat and an interesting blade guide design, It is a little expensive for me to import but may be worth looking at on your side of the pond.
Not that I am knocking the Hegner, because I am not, just a point of interest thats all.

Hey welcome to the board! I've got to ask (lazy for not looking it up myself), what is "sussed"? Meaning? Is it an English thing? Or my lack of knowledge?

In this context, sussed means sorted out, properly organised. It must be true that Britain and the US are two nations divided by a common language after all, huh ? I'll have to be a little more circumspect in future.

Yes, MDF can be hazardous, so I always use breathing protection. I wear a Trend Air Ace which makes me look like Darth Vader but at least it protects my lungs and doesn't fog up my spectacles. Actually, the latest government report on MDF says its no more dangerous than regular types of hardwood, so now I always wear the mask no matter what wood product I'm cutting.
