Woodworking in Upstate NY - March 2020

There are two great woodworking events happening in Upstate NY in March of 2020!
First, the Woodworking Shows is making their first appearance in New York State in 16 years. The dates are March 20-22. The location is the Horticulture Building at the New York State Fairgrounds just outside of Syracuse! Our club, the Woodworkers of Central New York, will have 8 booths demonstrating most of the woodworking disciplines including carving, scrolling, turning, general woodworking, and Shaker Box making! Buy your tickets ahead of time online to get the best price and check for a list of those who can enter for free!
Second, the Northeastern Woodworkers will again host their Showcase event in Saratoga Springs at the City Center adjacent to the Saratoga Hilton. The dates are March 28 & 29. In addition to the Showcase event, turners will be there for their annual Totally Turning event. Both events share two large galleries with all sorts of woodworking across a variety of categories and a vendor show. It is expected that more vendors will be in Saratoga because Syracuse is the last stop for the Woodworking Show for 2020. Yes, the weather can be questionable in March but remember, here in Upstate NY the weather changes hourly and all depends where you are! Heck, for a "storm" last Wednesday night into Thursday morning, the difference between my house on one side of a state highway and the other was about 6 inches and we are just 2 miles south of the highway. Plus, the highway people here in Upstate know how to take care of the roads!

Unfortunately, the COVID-19 virus caused both events to be cancelled. Darn it! The weather here in Syracuse is incredible! The sun is shining, nine "unique lawn mowers" are wandering in my backyard clipping and aerating the lawn, and the weekend weather is expected to be 'perfect' - just cold enough to push people to come to a show rather than getting started on spring lawn clean up but no major snowstorm predicted. We hope the folks that run The Woodworking Shows will put us on the 2021 schedule as there were plenty of woodworkers ready to attend this year!
Let's also hope the hype and issues will go away so everyone can return to meeting with fellow woodworkers in a group setting. For now, our Executive Board in consultation with our medical director, cancelled all events, meetings, demos, etc. for the rest of March and all of April. We hope to resume in May. We've encouraged members to create lots of things during this hiatus, including items for donation that will be sold at craft shows that we attend, sell at, and donate all proceeds to local children's charities. We've also setup a virtual show & tell gallery page on our website on which members projects will be showcased.
