  • Making Wooden " People and Pets" book

From the first time I saw these designs I had to make them. The first one I cut was in the Spring issue SSWWC. Well they just published a book of these stick figures by Jean-Bernard Germe. I had to order it. What a fun collection of 24 projects. This is my start. I am using scraps as they are not very big. The tree in the Holly log slice is my own.(2" tall) the stick figures are about 4" tall. They are all fast easy cuts. I really like the reader. I will do the female version of it also. I still have to put a coat or two of satin lacquer on them. The tree takes about three minutes to cut and another few minutes to carve (power carve using the Vortex F5) The paint is Unicorn spit.

I am with Denny, BUT I love the tree. I have thought about something like that, but you have so much more detail than i thought. Really 3D.

Nice work Rolf. I also like the tree the most although I also think the stick figures are kind of cute and amusing.

I am constantly looking for some new direction in my projects so that I don't lose my interest. Something about the simplicity of stick figures got me. We will see how they sell, I need to do a short video of making the trees. They really are fun to make.

I am pretty sure they will sell quite nicely. My wife sent me a picture of one of these and said 'make these!'. I had to research where they came from and if the patterns were available, and found the book and ordered off Amazon. They are really simple to cut, and just... cute? They are all happy and show love in almost every pattern.

Here is the reader stick figure with a bit of added detail/ This pallet wood is a bit soft and I got some blead around the eyes.

I started out cutting the stick figures and quickly got into wall hangers. I'll have to say the stick figures draw a lot of attention at shows. I really like the tree, Rolf! The live edge really makes the piece. Paint job is great also.

Rolf, I picked up the book from FC but nothing in it mentions a recommendation for how thick the wood should be. I imagine it should be at least 1/2” - 3/4” to be able to stand on their own. How thick was the wood you used?

These are are like compound cuts, very addicting for me.
A friend has a young aspiring poet and he made the reader for him and asked if I could engrave a few lines from one of his poems.
Here is another that I enjoyed making. A little shaping can really enhance these cuttings. Such as the nose on the puppy.

I have the same book and did the girl with her dog (on the cover) as a Christmas gift to our dog sitter using scrap hardwood. It was a big hit.

Haven’t made any to sell yet but my granddaughter did like the one in the magazine I sent her last year. Might try a few to put on my table this year to see if they sell. But I love the tree Rolf.
