    Joining wood & glue types

I am joining wood to sculpt. The size I commonly work at is approximately 12'x12'x18'. Is there a trick or possibly a book on how to do this so that there is not so much of a grain clash. I'm aware of which direction the wood goes when glueing together (ie. rings up to rings down). But can this be done so that the grain is more artisticly pleasing? Also what glue is best to use? I've been using Lokweld 20 yellow WD glue w/florescent dye, and I'm not pleased with white glue line. Can dry pigment be added to the glue prior to glueing (burnt umber or raw umber)? Perhaps cyanoacrylic acetate would be best? Thank you for any information.
