Tablesaws/bandsaws last forever so a saw from 81 is plausible, I'm thinking a new SawStop . . . but since this thread was created under off-topic, instead of under tools, and since Rolf mentioned "toy" instead of "tool", I'm starting to pivot my guess to something non-woodworking.

The 3d printer would be fun, but we have a couple of libraries near by that have them you just have to pay for material.
Randy it is not wood working.

I started this thread because John Nelson (the other one) reminded me about doing this years ago.

I don't normally buy power tools from Harbor Freight but made an exception. Purchased a Fortress 26 gallon upright compressor for my garage. It is a lot quieter than most. Oil less. It looks just like the small California unit I have in the basement that came with pneumatic Vortex F5 carver. It does have some mixed reviews, but most of the complaints are a non issue for me. Time will tell. I bought My Old Craftsman in 1985 not 81. It was getting tired and taking forever to pump up. I still have the receipt. It was $393 back then for the 12 gallon version.
I painted an old VW square back with it. But for the most part not enough air for air tools.

I bought one of the smaller fortress compressors, and was amazed how "weirdly quiet" it is. I love that thing. I have a couple of non-portable compressors in the shop, but they stay put and are very loud.

Randy I have this California compressor. It looks just like the Fortress version. As you said amazingly quiet. One outlet is connected to my power carver the other is connected to another regulator and I use it when airbrushing. I did have a problem with it when I first got it. There is an "check valve" that prevents tank pressure from bleeding back into the pumps. That was not working, so when the compressor started up it stalled and overheated the motor. fortunately I smelled it or may have caught fire. I took the valve apart found a tiny bit of debris. Works fine since then but I always turn it off when not in use to be safe. The Fortress is now in the Garage. It took a bit of time to fill from empty will see how well it cycles when in use.

The upright looks similar to the Kobalt I bought last year.

It is much quieter than my old Cambell Hausfeld compressor. I wouldn't be surprised if they are made in the same factory.

Bill, you are probably right. Like Pegas saws and others of the same design come from the same factory. Kobalt makes some nice products.
It will be interesting to see how our compressors hold up once I give mine a workout. I wonder how they get them so quiet. I also have a twin tank Stanley I picked up used many many years ago that is horrible noise wise. it will be going out in a yard sale in the spring along with my old Craftsman.
