I needed something quick so I made my first hollow ornament with a finial.
Maple and not sure. It is about 6" tall.

Hey Rolf - I can make something like that in clay and in plaster. I guess one day I should try using wood - LOL!
A very nice piece indeed. I also like the curved wood support in the second photo. Did you steam the wood or cut it to give it the curve?
Thinking out loud a piece like this could make a really attractive clock pendulum, maybe hiding a brass core in it to give it some additional weight.

The hollowing is done with an initial hole drilled in the center with contempt a hollowing tool. For this it was small scraper.
Jim the stand is steam bent oak. I did it a few years ago.Rolf
