I have been learning how turn pens just a short time now and decided to give one to one of my patients. He is a "younger" guy in his late 60s that has been going through a lot of not so fun medical issues. He had such a big smile on his face when I gave it to him. I wish I could do more to help him.

I bet he likes that pen. It is a beautiful one. I've got pen making stuff coming later this week and I'm looking forward to making more pens myself. My pen press came yesterday... I also made a sled for cutting pen blanks on the scroll saw.. Works great too... Great job on the pen,, FayHave a great day, Fay.

The wood that I used was some walnut I had leftover from another project.
Thanks for the kind comments.Susan

Barrow trimmers? Are those the same thing as that doodad that you true up the blanks with after you install the brass tube? I have mill thing that came in the beginner pen kits that I got. I ordered 5 kits and 2 acrylic blanks and 3 of some sort of a red wood , but not sure what that wood is. So the components of the pens and the blanks will be here on Saturday in the mail. Unfortunately the kits don't come with the blanks, but if they do, then I'll have extra blanks. It'll be fun, but I'm going to make my pens a little bit beefy but not like that last one I made. It'll be much slimmer and I hope I won't have any problems with the acrylic blanks. One is a cobalt blue and the other one has some purple in it so those will be interesting to try. I want to give a nice pen to my Dr. who had saved my life a few years ago when he said my heart didn't sound right. I would have died on about 6 months or less if he hadn't sent me to a heart specialist when he did. I was going to give him the guitar clock I made but I think a pen in a nice wooden display box will be a nice thing to give him. This is going to be fun. In the mean time I have been practicing the captive rings and such.. FayLast edited by Fay P; 07-31-2014, 11:27 PM.Have a great day, Fay.

Yes they are. What pen kits did you get? As for making the larger grip ones I have found the cigar type ones work great for that. Plus it lets you show off the wood more.Susan

You are sooooo right. Acrylic was fun to turn, I did my first one about 2weeks ago. Someone saw it while I was out and about and bought it from me. I tried to give it to them but they would not accept it.Susan

Hi Susan, I got the slim line set and it had enough stuff to make 3 pens but one pen broke so I have 2 pens left from that kit. I have more stuff coming today and I'm so looking forward to trying the acrylic. The cigar pens would be fun to make also, but not sure if you can use the same mandrel for the slim lines pen with that or not. Will have to go to the other site and ask some questions on that. Going to go lie down for awhile. I did not get much sleep last night at all... FayHave a great day, Fay.

I do the same and have a fair amount of different sized bushings. I put them in a container with dividers to keep them separate from the others. I then put a label on each little section so I know which bushings are which.Susan

Read some Larry Dossey books. You may have done more for your patient than you think.
But, the pen looks pretty nice.
Keep up the 'good work' - on both sides of the fence.

Reply to Hello from Central Floridaby John SmithThanks guys, I have a lot of HDU left over from my sign business in various thicknesses.
HDU doesn't "fuse" or repair itself under heat or friction. Only acrylics and some PVC materials do that. Depending on what part of the world you are in, you would have to google HDU Distributors...-

Reply to Phone call from son.by Jim McDonaldMy kids always call me since I am the one who probably did the stuff they are calling about.
I know it's scary to get that call, but I'm glad to hear the charge exited where it did before it went any further.
Probably hurts like hell and he has a copper taste in his mouth...-
