If it is ceramic tile I use a chipping hammer with a wide chisel, if it is vinyl tile then I use a floor scraper. After the ceramic is removed then you have to go back with the scraper and get the thin set down so it is a fairly smooth surface.
If you have a Harbor Freight near you one of their multifunction tools comes in pretty handy for scraping and cutting door jambs and base boards. Oscillating Multifunction Power Tool w/ Variable Speed

The answer is yes you can go over the tile BUT you have to be careful with things such as door clearance, in kitchens I have run into situations where if the tile was not removed then the dishwasher would not have enough clearance to come out if it ever needed repair or replacement. I typically strip the old flooring just to avoid the headaches. Each house is a little different so there is no real rule saying you can or cannot go over the existing floor.
I just put down 1800 sq ft of laminate last week so if you have any questions ask away while it is still fresh in the memory banks.

Are you talking about laminate flooring or tongue and groove wood flooring?

Costco flooring questions
Yo the forum
We purchased some of the snap together flooring from Costco yesterday. Looks easy enough but I have a question I can't find the answer to on line.
Do I need to remove the old floor tile first or is it OK to put down the poly barrier then just put the wood down on top of that?
Any other advice or tips are welcome.Tags: None

Reply to Peanuts #1by millwabThanx Rolf. I also found a package of Olson 3/0 blades I had. They are 33TPI x .008T x .022W
I’m guessing that’s their equivalent of a puzzle blade since they don’t sell one specifically labeled as such....-

by markdavdAre there specific issues about how the patterns are printed that cause everyone problems? If not, whatever they change made to make some of you happy will make others unhappy. I prefer things published at 100% if practical.
Maybe what's needed is a comprehensive article with all the possible...-

by RolfFirst a disclaimer, Yes I do projects for them and an occasional article but I am not an employee and am not speaking for them.
But I will be a bit defensive here. If you have ever been to FC you would know that they have a very small staff that publishes three magazines and several books,...-
