does anyone know what type of clear coat I could use for the lamp shade itself? I'm not sure how hot the bulb will get and am in need of something that might be heat resistant,

Perhaps I haven't cut at a steep enough angle, but the existing blade hole has been sufficient. I do despise the useless vacuum holes, but I've learned to live with them...
