  • Report a Inappropriate Post process

....what happens when you report a post as inappropriate or spam?

    Who gets the message?

What is a reasonable response time?

I ask as I saw a potential "begin the flame wars" post and used the button. Although 3 mods were "online", a few hours went by and guess what........another "attack" post.

    So......how does it work?

I received the email notifications of inapropriate posts.
one at 5:45 and one at 8:30
I am not sure if it showed me online or not.
Sometimes I leave the computer and do not log off the forum.
The post has been locked and the comments soft deleted.
If the members who made the posts would like to modify them I can restore them for that purpose.

Another thing can happen. The mods can be online but not have their email open. This could also cause a delay

My apologies for the delay in response time.

      No apologies necessary.

I was looking for a general outline of "what happens" when you submit a post as "inappropriate".

Do all mods get notified? Just the mods for that particular section??? Can any mod lock/delete/edit?????? Does a mod need concurrance of other mods before taking action??????? What if a mod is the one posting inappropriately??????

Again, just general questions prompted by a specific post...... I don't expect you to be here 24/7.......... BobD might but I don't

I appreciate ALL you do Carl.

      Thanks!

When you flag a post as being inapropriate an email notification is automatically sent to mods and admins.

I am not sure if all mods get the notification or only ones in charge of that section.
I also don't know who is in charge of what

Mods can delete or lock a thread. There is more than one delete option. Soft delete which makes it not visible to members but mods and administrators can still view and edit it. And hard delete, total erasure of a thread, which I do when porn spam with pictures shows up, Threads of that nature seldom make it to the members now due to the new precautions Rob Starr has implemented.

A mod can take action without the concurrence of other mods. Specially if it is offensive. If there is some debate it can happen behind the scenes and things can be implemented or restored at a time decided by the mods or administrators.

Think of the mods as deputies and the admins as the sheriffs.

Hope that clears some of the fog

Any mods that got the e-mail...can you let me know? I didn't get one myself...

Then again, I'm not allowed to check my work e-mail from home, and am seldom allowed to check the forum from home...spouse rules!

Thanks Carl! I also appreciate all that you do!

The little icon that looks like a warning sign with an exclaimation mark on it at the top of a thread window allows you to flag a post.

For Bob D: I received the Email then logged on to the Mod's section to see what was happening. I saw that the matter was being discussed between two or three other Mod's in an effort to resolve the situation so I replied to the Email and took no further action. For Forum Members: Moderation of posts is not as "black and white" as it might appear. Individual Moderators hesitate to delete some posts that may appear to be inflammatory for fear of trodding on other's rights. We are Moderators, not Censors. We will immediately and permanantly delete posts from, and ban members who, post pornographic or other obviously inappropriate materials. On the other hand, a lot of discussion occurs "behind the scenes" before action is taken against a member whose posts are perceived as being contrary to the Bill of Rights. We try to respect all our members opinions and try VERY hard to steer clear of outright censorship. We always try to reach some concensus regarding reported posts rather than summarily taking action as individual Moderators. I suppose we try to determine the "intent" behind a post before judging the "content" of the post. We cannot all express ourselves in writing as well as we can with the spoken word so sometimes well intended posts are perceived as inflammatory or inappropriate. It's not always easy to determine the difference.

                      Thanks Carl and Neal.

FWIW, I prefer the way the thread was handled last night over behind the scenes discussions. Delay in responding can, has, and will continue to escalate the flames when they occur - (thankfully that is rare on this board).

Again, I appreciate understanding how it works. And Carl, you were not showing on-line until around 8:00 p.m. Another mod or two were showing, but not you.

                          Well said Neal.
Unfortunately, I didn't receive an e-mail (I think I was online last night). If you see me online however, by all means shoot me a PM.

I am an administrator on a board and what we have is an invisible forum that only the moderators can get into. We ask that they move the topic to that forum and then from there we can chat and decide what to do.
If the topic needs to be put back all we do then is move it back to where it was.
I am the one that has the job of deleting members and that also has to be done carefully. Spammers are a real pain and I despise them with a passion.
I check many times a day and delete the obvious ones. If we are not sure if the person is legit or not then we will write a welcome letter asking where they found us and to tell us a little bit about themselves.
We also have the board set up so that you cannot post until I activate your account. Makes it worse for me but harder for spammers to put in their viagra advertising.

Bruce lets it soak in on the cardholders, takes 24 hrs. I let everything drip for a few minutes then wipe excess off. 50/50 takes longer to dry than 40/60. I usually move everything upstairs and turn the ceiling fan on to to help it soak in. This finish takes 3-4 days to dry enough to take to shows....
